Durante más de una hora conversamos animadamente sobre los intereses y preocupaciones de Ricarco Bak Gordon. Agrupamos la conversación en bloques, que no son estancos, que interaccionan y se vuelven permeables con intención de que su lectura avance argumentos que se podrán ver claramente en las obras seleccionadas para esta monografía. Y lanzar, de esta forma, una invitación al lector a visitar la arquitectura que aquí se muestra.

For more than an hour, we talked animatedly about Ricardo Bak Gordon’s interests and concerns. We divided the conversation into blocks that were not watertight, that interacted and became permeable, with the intention that their reading would advance arguments that will be clearly seen in the works selected for this monograph. And, in this way, to launch an invitation to the reader to visit the architecture shown here.

Alberte Pérez: What role does it play in your work? Ricardo Bak Gordon : Architecture is a subjective equation. Let’s think of a competition, 100 architects with the same programme, the same site, and we’ll get 100 different answers. If there were 1000, there would be 1000 different answers. This should make us think: how is this possible? From such objective things, apparently, as the programme, the place, they can give so many answers and so different. The truth is that nothing is the same. Each person reads each variable of the equation differently, so the result of this subjective reading is different. This leads us to affirm that place is a fundamental part of the project. Although there is much more information that conditions the project apart from the place, I can’t imagine doing a project with my back to the context. The physical place is important, but also what it evokes in you, the sensations, perceptions and intuitions are a good breeding ground for a project. Are you using the project to transform the site? Architecture must be a sounding board of the place, to be retransmitted later, to re-signify the same place. It is also important to understand that there are times when our work has more reasons to re-signify the place and others to pass more discreetly, to give continuity. It depends on the conditions of the project or programme. Some programmes call for more prominence and others are continuity programmes. Adding something in a built-up area like ours is a big responsibility. A lot has been built; every time you build something you have to know that it’s likely to outlive you. We have to be aware of that responsibility; it is important to be able to build.

Alberte Pérez: ¿Qué importancia tiene el lugar en tus obras? Ricardo Bak Gordon: La arquitectura es una ecuación subjetiva. Pensemos en un concurso, 100 arquitectos con el mismo programa, el mismo lugar y tendremos 100 respuestas diferentes. Si fuesen 1000, serían 1000 respuestas distintas. Esto nos debe hacer pensar, ¿cómo es posible? A partir de cosas tan objetivas, aparentemente, como el programa, la ubicación, pueden dar tantas respuestas y tan distintas. La verdad es que nada es lo mismo. Cada persona lee cada variable de la ecuación de forma diferente, por eso el resultado de esa lectura subjetiva es diferente. Esto nos lleva a afirmar que el lugar es un ingrediente fundamental del proyecto. Aunque hay mucha más información que condiciona el proyecto además del lugar, no me imagino realizando un proyecto de espaldas al contexto. El lugar físico es importante pero también lo que este te provoca, las sensaciones, percepciones e intuiciones son buen caldo de cultivo para proyectar. ¿Utilizas el proyecto para la trasformación del lugar? La arquitectura debe ser una caja de resonancia del lugar para después retransmitir, resignificar ese mismo lugar. También es importante entender que hay momentos en que nuestro trabajo tiene más razones para resignificar el lugar y otras para pasar más discretamente, dar continuidad. Depende de las condiciones del proyecto o del programa. Algunos programas piden más protagonismo y otros son programas de continuidad. Añadir algo, en un territorio construido como el nuestro es una gran responsabilidad. Se ha construido mucho, cada vez que construyes algo, debes saber que probablemente va a durar más que tú. Debemos ser conscientes de esta responsa bilidad, es importante para poder construir.
