Los inviernos en Oporto suelen ser fríos y húmedos, con fuertes lluvias durante gran parte del curso escolar. Este centro se construyó en la década de 1970 como una serie de pabellones separados. Su modernización se incluyó en un programa para introducir nuevos recursos que ahora se consideran esenciales para la educación pública. En el contexto del nuevo programa y las condiciones climáticas, diseñamos un edificio que es el espacio central de la escuela. El edificio se ajusta al programa y ofrece una amplia zona de recreo exterior pero cubierta. El edificio es lineal y a la zona cubierta se abren dos de las partes más dinámicas de la escuela: la biblioteca y la cafetería. Se encuentra en el espacio entre los edificios ya existentes y, al sugerir dislocación, esto llevó a un diseño de cubierta para la zona abierta que parece inestable y sin apoyo. Los colores vivos de las nuevas estancias contrastan con la neutralidad de las aulas y la mayor intensidad se encuentra en la gran «plaza» cubierta.

Winters in Porto are usually cold and wet, with heavy rain during much of the school year. This school was built in the 1970s as a series of separate pavilions. It was included in the modernization of Portuguese secondary schools, a program that aims to introduce new resources that are now considered essential for public education. In the context of the new program and the climate, we designed a building that is the school’s central space. It complies with the brief and provides a large recreational area that is external but covered. The building is linear, and opening onto the covered area are two of the most dynamic parts of the school: the library and the cafeteria. It is located in the space between the existing buildings, suggesting dislocation, which led to a roof design for the open area that appears unstable and not supported. Intense colours in the new environments contrast the neutrality of the classrooms, and the greatest intensity is in the grand covered “square”.
